Horror: Sub-Genres & Terms

One of the things I love about writing horror, is that you don’t always have to stick to the basic ideas of a group of teens going into the woods, a beast that scales the Empire State Building or a madman running loose in the streets.  Instead, you can include all different types of ideas and themes and still make the plot interesting and scary at the same time.

Having said that, I wanted to provide you with a list originally published by Dark Echo that can break it all down for you.  Click here to read the article.

Facebook Fan Club

I was pleasantly surprised today when I opened my email to find that, Gina Kinsman, a fan from the UK (London), started a Facebook Fan Club for my writing.

Thanks Again, Gina.  You rock!

Novella Project – Update

Some of you newbies on my site, might not be familiar with the novella project that was originally started with two other authors and myself.

Adam P. Lewis and I are both finished with our novellas.  The problem is, until recently, that we ‘lost’ our third author during the beginning of the project.  To this very day we are not entirely sure what happened to him, but we believe an evil garden gnome might have finished him off.  In any event, there is now a new author on board to write the third novella for the book.

Her name is Misty Gersley, editor at Withersin Magazine.  You might recognize the name of the mag, as I have written several book reviews in the past and continue to do so.  If you have never read the magazine, I highly suggest checking out the site and ordering yourself a single copy or better yet, a subscription.

Adam and I both believe she will make a wonderful addition to the project and are looking forward to reading the crazy stuff that will come out of her head!

Paco Ahlgren’s Discipline

As many of you are well aware, I started writing Night School in the early part of 2008.  It was then published in November of the same year.  Before that, I was a fan of the horror genre in general.  But, it wasn’t until I read Discipline by Paco Ahlgren that I really started to entertain the idea of writing a novel, myself.

Since I first read Paco’s novel at the end of 2007, he and I have become good friends and I am even more excited for him now, as his book was recentely optioned for the bigscreen.

So, if you are a fan of horrific or scifi tales, I would suggest checking out his website and then heading over to your local bookstore or online to pick up a copy.

Again, Congrats Paco.  You’re a hell of an author and friend and you deserve it!

Writers Workshop of Horror

If you wanna be a successful horror writer, you need to learn from the best.  That’s what you have with Writers Workshop of Horror edited by Michael Knost.

Writers Workshop of Horror is a collection of articles on the craft of writing horror.  Each article — written by some very big names (Brian Keene, Clive Barker, Gary Braunbeck, J.F. Gonzalez, Deborah LeBlanc, Jason Sizemore and many others) — tackles a specific element of the writing craft as it relates to the horror and dark fiction genres.

Night School – Now in Large Print

I was recently informed by my publisher of two happenings.

1)  Night School is now being offered in a Large Print edition.

2)  The price of the Hardcover edition of the book will go up (I don’t know to what) beginning next week.

So, if you’re partially blind order a copy of the Large Print and if you want the Hardcover at the current price, I would suggest ordering one in the next few days.  Remember, the Large Print and the Hardcover editions of the book are only available at the current time through my publisher.  The Softcover is still available at any major online bookstore.

Now on Facebook!

Yup, that’s right.  I’ve joined the drones of people and have joined Facebook.  I have contemplated whether or not to join for some time now, but yesterday night decided to ‘go for it’ and ‘see what happens’.  At this point, I’m not sure how long the page will be online, though I suppose that all depends on YOU.  So, if you want to add me to your existing or new Facebook page, go ahead.  You’ll more than likely get a more personal look into my life…whether that’s a good or bad thing…that’s for you to decide.

Enjoy and Happy 4th of July.  Be Safe!

Settled & Ready to Write, again

I finally have all my things here in the suburb of Toledo, OH, where I’ll be living for the time being.  This was after 5 round trips back and forth from Cleveland to Toledo.  Needless to say, that’s alot of miles and gas money for a 7 day period.

Now it’s time to finish putting my crap away and start working (writing), again.

The top three things on my ‘To Do’ list are as follows:

  • Edit the novella that I finished writing about a week ago.
  • Continue talks with a magazine (I can’t tell you which one quite yet) about writing a serialized story for them, which would appear in parts in 2 or 3 issues in a row (this is a print magazine).
  • Start working again on my ‘novel-in-progress’ (currently at 25k words) about a ‘monster’.

Just the above items should keep me busy for awhile.  Besides what I just stated above, there is also the ‘Cake Batter’ film, which is in the works, as well.

Busy, busy, busy…but that’s the way it should be!
