A Year In Review (and a look forward)

Two thousand and ten was a pretty damn good year for me – both personally and professionally.  I got engaged right before the new year to my beautiful fiancé (believe me, it’s essential you have someone in your corner that believes in what you’re trying to accomplish), strengthened existing and literally made dozens of new friendships and had a slew of book deals and some other various ventures come to fruition that will be announced after the first of the upcoming year (one in particular is going to blow a lot of people’s socks off in the publishing world).  In 2010 I had a short film come out, a few short stories (including one in Shroud) and two anthologies where I was the Editor.  Then comes the upcoming year; where I have a total of seven books that are due to be released.  Half of these titles I will be Editor on and the other half will be my own writings.  Looking all the way to 2012; there will be a short story collection, a novella and another anthology where I’ll be the Editor.  Almost all of the upcoming books during the next two years were announced in 2010.  So, as you can see, it has been a hell of a year.

2010 was the year I set the stage of things to come.  2011 is when I start to take over the genre – in more ways than one – but that involves the announcement that will be made after the first of the year.

December Release Updates

Due to some issues at the printer; the Fell Beasts anthology I’m Editor on and my short story collection, For After Midnight, that were originally scheduled for release late this month have been delayed until sometime in January.   I’ll keep you updated as I learn more.

Create A New Banner Contest

Now that the last Richard Laymon Book Contest is over for this year (yes, it will return in 2011) it’s time for a different type of contest.  Yes, you’ll still have the chance to score a free book, actually a few free books – but they will be mine this time.

Here is how it works.

I’m looking for some new artwork to display at the top of my website.  I would like the new banner (it needs to be a little larger than 760×200 pixels so I can crop if needed) that incorporates my existing books (except Night School – which is now out of print and I don’t promote any longer) and forthcoming releases.  Even though the cover art hasn’t been announced for the majority of my future titles, I would still like to have artwork of what the books are about incorporated in the new banner.  This can be open to your interpretation.  The only detail that definitely needs to be in there is my name, of course.  Other than that, you can put your artist abilities to the test and let fly.

The winner will receive, upon publication, the following titles:  Fell Beasts anthology (Edited by me), For After Midnight (my short story collection) and Twisted Tales from the Torchlight Inn anthology (the 3-novella collection by Thomas A. Erb, Dean Harrison and myself).  So, as each one is released and I receive my contributor copies, I’ll send you an autographed copy of each.

How to enter:

You have until January 14th to get your entries to me (my email address is under the Contact page).  I will then announce the winner and credit you for the banner on or before January 16th.  The new banner will also appear at the top of the page at that time.

The Fields – An Update

I mentioned here that The Zombie Feed, an Imprint of Apex Publications, will be putting out my zombie novella, The Fields, in the first quarter of 2011.  Now, I’m extremely happy and grateful to announce, that NY Times Bestselling author, Jonathan Maberry, just sent me the Introduction that he wrote for my novella.

2nd Annual Laymon Book Contest – Part II

As many of you know, the massive and incredibly awesome work of the late great Richard Laymon is what inspired me to start writing.  Because of this; last year I started what has now become an annual event – The Richard Laymon Book Contest.  In fact, this is the second time this year I’ll be giving away a book.  You can read about the origins of the contest here.  As always, many thanks to Ann Laymon, who graciously donated what you’ll see up for grabs.

So without further ado…I bring you the next book that you can enter to win.

About the Novel:

Though gloomy with clouds, it is a hot, August morning in the summer of 1963. All over the rural town of Grandville, tacked to power poles and trees, taped to store windows, blowing along the sidewalks, fliers have appeared announcing the mysterious one-night-only performance of The Traveling Vampire Show.

The show will feature Valeria, the only known vampire in captivity. According to the fliers, she is a gorgeous, stunning beauty. In the course of the performance, she will stalk volunteers from the audience, sink her teeth into their necks and drink their blood!

For three local teenagers who see the fliers, this is a show they don’t want to miss.

But they may have to.

Though they can probably scrape up the price of admission, other obstacles stand in the way. One problem, nobody under 18 years of age is allowed into the show. Dwight, Rusty, and Slim are only 16. Another problem, the show begins at midnight and the three teens always have to be home by then. If that weren’t bad enough, the show is to take place at Janks Field — a desolate patch of ground with a nasty history — that has been declared off limits by their parents.

The situation appears hopeless.

Though Dwight and his friends fear they won’t be able to attend the actual performance of the Traveling Vampire Show, they do have the entire day to themselves. Why not hike out to Janks Field and take a look around? With any luck, they might be able to watch the crew make preparations for tonight’s performance. If they’re really lucky, maybe they’ll get a peek at Valeria, the gorgeous vampire.

And so the three friends set off on foot for Janks Field…

Dwight is a solid, honest kid, long on common sense and loyalty to his friends. He always tries to do what’s right.

Rusty is a husky guy who relishes trouble.

Slim, their long-time pal, is the brains of the outfit, a voracious reader of novels, an aspiring writer, and a girl. Also, she is sometimes too brave for her own good.

The Traveling Vampire Show is the tale, told in Dwight’s own words, of what happened to him, Rusty and Slim on that hot summer day they hiked to Janks Field. It’s the story of their friendship and love, their temptations, their betrayals, and their courage as they went where they shouldn’t go, did what they shouldn’t do… and ran into big trouble.

 

This is the Unsigned Second Edition Hardcover featuring the same production values as the Limited Edition but without a signature sheet.  It was originally priced at $40.00 but now you have the opportunity to get it for FREE.

Laymon’s Rules of Writing

“Laymon’s Rules of Writing” is a slightly revised version of a chapter from, A Writer’s Tale, published by Deadline Press in 1998 (I’m actually lucky enough to own a copy of this).  You can read the aforementioned version here.

As a side note – yes, I have posted this before, and yes, I’m doing it again because I think it speaks a shit ton of truth for writers in every genre.

Oh, and because the 2nd and last ‘Richard Laymon Book Contest’ of 2010 is coming tomorrow…anyone like vampires?!  (hint hint)  Stay tuned…
